Guys: When you ask for a girl's phone number, are you looking for a friend? Or more?

A female Singapore age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Guys: When you approach a girl for her number and introduce yourself as being interested in making friends with her, are you guys purely pursuing this relationship as a platonic one or do you usually have something more in mind? And do you get jealous/insecure if your girlfriend has a lot of admirers, even when she is ignoring them and assuring you that you're the one she loves?

A reader, anonymous, writes (28 June 2012):

Never once have I ever asked a random girl for her phone number and only wanted to be friends. There is no guy in the history of mankind that does ask for a random girls number and only wants to be friends.

"And do you get jealous/insecure if your girlfriend has a lot of admirers, even when she is ignoring them and assuring you that you're the one she loves?"

Not me no, I kind of like the fact that I have a girlfriend other guys want but my girlfriend isn't stupid enough to give out her phone number to guys or to just assume that a random guy who adds her on Facebook or suddenly starts wanting to spend time with her is just being "friendly". So I don't have a problem with her being admired because she doesn't feed that and she acts appropriately.

If however she gave guys her phone number, started having friendly "chats" with guys who turn up out of nowhere I'd quickly lose my trust in her.
