Does anybody have any advice on getting a good nights sleep and how to clear my mind so i can relax?

I've had a lot of stress in my life lately and am finding it really hard to get to sleep, i maybe sleep 4 or 5 hours a night if i'm lucky.

Look into meditation and thought stopping processes. Ive done this and it helps very much but requires some practice. In fact, I could send you a doc if u like about how that stuff works I got thru my counselor. I used to do it after I was done at the gym...and would sleep like a baby always. I would exercise, meditate, then take some unisom (OTC sleep aid) and Id be off in dream land lol. Good luck.

The relaxation method in one of the other answers is pretty much the way to go. Don't stress yourself out further more with restricting yourself from things such as TV or eating before bed, because if you do happen to do these things you'll have it set in your mind you won't be able to sleep.

Only other thing I can suggest is try getting into bed for a certain time, each night and getting up at the same time each day. Even if you find it fairly difficult to sleep at first with persistence you might fall into the routine.

As you lie down on the bed take a big deep breath and then exhale. Now tense, hold and relax one part of your body at a time. Start with your toes, take in one big breath and hold it as tense up just your toes on one foot, hold that tense for 5 seconds then release, and exhale. Now do the other toes. Now tense etc one foot at a time. Do the same to hands, then legs, then arms, then tummy and so on. Last is is raise eyebrows tense etc. At the end your body will be much more relaxed. Now think of an utterly relaxing place where there is just you. Allow yourself to relax and be enveloped by warmth and love as you close your eyes and you feel the warm rays of sunshine beam down on you. Hear the lapping calm water. Feel a gentle warm breeze on your skin. And softly say in your head: 'You are safe. You are calm' Repeat this relaxation routine every night to trigger an image every night and say the affirmation above, and you will start associate it with sleep once you have practised this routine for 6 weeks every night without fail. Think of nothing else as you prepare to drift off to slepp save for your special imaginary place. Maybe a beach on a verdant empty tropical island. Clutter is unsettling so do a big tidy up of your bedroom. Allow no TV in your bedroom. Put away anything that should be in the wardrobe. Put away out of sight anything you can. So in the end your bedroom is the clean floor, bed, side table (NOT piled high with books) Set up a routine that you follow each evening, to relax you. So that could include no coffee and no alcohol and no ciggarettes in the 3 hours before you go to bed, but instead have a warm hot drink, such as a milk/chocolate based drink in the hour before you go to bed. Half an hour before bed have a warm shower. change your pillowcases and sheets more often than you would regularly. Dust mites are microscopic but deadly and some people think they can affect very sensitive skins. Get yourself a new good quality pillow and replace it every 2 years. A nice pillow can help you sleep better.

dmartin89 agony auntDon't watch tv or read magazines an hour before bed.

Don't exercise within 2 hours of bedtime.

Drink warm milk and honey - this is a natural sedative.

Eating a large meal within a couple hours of bed is giving you energy you don't need so eat at latest of 7pm.

Clear your mind of troubling or stressful thoughts by writing them down and telling yourself that you can deal with them in the morning when you have more energy.

Stick to 4 cups of caffeine a day. That includes coke etc..

Dont watch tv or bring a laptop into your bedroom. This takes away the fact that your bedroom is a place to sleep.

Bearing all of these things in mind, it should make a huge difference. Enjoy all your sleep :-)
