I traveled to both China, Korea and Japan pretty cheap.
First of all, remember to stay safe, if something will cost a little more but is less "shady" spend the extra cash, it will be worth it in the end. Especially if you are traveling by yourself.
Youth Hostels are a cheap way to travel and meet other travelers to do things with or get advise from them, remember they are also traveling cheap and probably have some good recommendations. Check out the website called "HostelWorld" it has good reviews and I have had good luck with it.
Walking is cheapest, and then public transportation. Take advantage of this inside cities. Also don't look too much like a tourist in places like LA. When walking down a normal street walk like you have a purpose and you know where you are going. If you get lost keep walking like you know where you are going until you can ask a police officer or someone at a convenience store for information. Most of all use common sense and if you don't feel good about a situation, don't do it.
If you stay at cheap places like youth or backpacker hostels. Don't party EVERY night. Walk where you can and take public transportation when you can. Also try local foods that are inexpensive. You will have a great time at about the cheapest price.
Good Luck.

Make sure somebody at home knows your itinery, and do phone home.
Don't loose sight of things you wouldn't do at home - re safety such as walking alone after dark etc.
