Forgot my pill, what should I do?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

This is just an enquiry - basically I'm on the pill and have been for a few years now - I forgot to take the pill after a night out and it slipped my mind as I was on my period shortly after. Now when I finished me and my boyfriend had an accident and didn't think too much of it as me being stupid still thought I was protected but I won't be as you aren't for the next 7 days! It only occurred to me today as I started my new strip and I'm past the three day marker to take the morning after pill - am I just over panicking? Or is there another method that could help reduce the risk of pregnancy? Should I contact my GP.

Yes I realise I have made a stupid mistake due to forgetting and should be more careful but we usually are very much so (we still use condoms even though I am on the pill and have for the three years we have been together). In fact this is only the second accident we have had - the first made me go on the pill. Any advice please? Thanks.

person12345 agony auntYou absolutely cannot take the morning after pill while on birth control pills, you will make yourself sick and overload your system with hormones. There's nothing more you can do other than wait it out and keep taking the pills as normal. I would call your GP for advice.

Honest Answer agony auntContact your GP. Not that I think that you are pregnant, but because the stress that you are probably going through is likely to have adverse effects on a home pregnancy test. Stress is a powerful thing.

If you have been taking the pill everyday for 7 years, it is unlikely that you have become pregnant, it is possible, but not likely.

Go see your GP and reafirm my best guess.

Good Luck!

Jeff

its called Brevinor I have just been doing some research on it and it appears that is a strong pill however when my GP advised it I was told that it was weak. I have read the instructions over and over and all it says is that if you miss a pill you need to use extra precaution for the next 7 days!

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (7 June 2010):

chigirl agony auntWhat type of pill are you on (name please) and what does it say in your instructions? In my leaflet it says when I can skip pills safely (if I've pushed my period a few days back or so I can stop the pills at any time in the second "packet" I use, and still be protected. I am not sure if you forgot the very last pill on the packet that you might still be safe. Your body has been pushed into a cycle in a way, and the hormone levels are what protects you in a way, so it could be that your hormone levels were already so hight that one missed pill right before your period didn't matter? But, I don't know for sure, this is just guessing. Continue to take your pill as usual from this point in, and use a condom at the same time for the next 7 days. Then next month take a pregnancy test. That is all I can advice you to do. A doctor will probably tell you if you were at a chance of being pregnant or not, but wont be able to say if you are pregnant or not. So better to just get a pregnancy test in about a month and see.
