 Yes of course you can offer to pay, but don't get in a fight over it. More importantly, have some plan for after the bowling. Will you go for something to eat? Will you go for a drink? Will you just go home? Work out how you would like the evening to end - probably not at his flat for the first night I suggest.
And as for the nerves - well, he will be as nervous as you. Everybody gets a bit nervous in situations like that. Just be yourself and have fun.
