Fear of the rain. Anyone heard of this?

I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a fear of the rain before?

It started a year ago, when I was walking to work. I had just walked down the road from my home when it poured down with rain. I was soaked in 5 seconds flat. The sky was black, and when I looked around, there was nobody else about, only me. It felt like the rain had personally attacked me. I had to go back home to change.

Ever since, I have been scared of the rain. If I have to go out in it, I feel sick with dread, my heart races. And I feel panicky when the rain touches me, even just a few drops. Imagine if it was raining acid, and you had to go out in it. Imagine how scared you would feel about the thought of one drop hitting you. That's how I feel. I keep thinking that the rain is trying to hurt me.

Has anyone ever heard of, or experienced, anything like this before?

Thanks for the responses. I do still force myself to go out in the rain, but it doesn't seem to be making it any easier. In fact, it seems to be getting worse.

Even if I know that someone I care about, like my mom, has been out in the rain, I have to phone her to check that she is okay, and that the rain hasn't "hurt" her.

I do think that I sound ridiculous. I feel really stupid about this, and ashamed to tell people. But it is incredibly distressing for me. I suppose if it has a name though, then I can't be the only one going through this!

It's called Ombrophobia.

Put that into google and do some research.

The best way to get over it though is just to pull your socks up and go outside on a rainy day and tell yourself not to be stupid.

Face your fear.
