reader, anonymous, writes (9 December 2013): Yeah and about 99% of them are lonely losers who never moved on and were on/off months, years even decades later.
The idea of that phrase OP is to help people move on. If it's meant to be it will happen, so move on with your life and completely forget them kind of thing.
People just don't get the meaning behind these things at all.
Basically it's to tell those pining love fools it's time to let go. Stop trying, if it happens again in the future then great (it won't and it shouldn't), if not then you'll have moved on anyway. That's all that phrase means to me.
