Does this mean my birth control isn't working?

Question - (28 August 2008) 1 Answers - (Newest, 28 August 2008)
A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I have a birth control question.

I have been on the depo for almost four years and for the last three years I haven't had a period except for occasional spotting when my shot is due.

My problem is the last four days I have had bright red blood. For the first two days it was just a little right after sex. I didn't feel any pain during or after sex. Then yesterday (day 3) I had a little blood after sex and then when I didn't have sex I had blood three more times each time less blood then no blood at all. Today I haven't had sex and I have had blood the last three times I went to the bathroom.

I have not changed sexual partners ever in my life and neither has my partner so it couldn't be an STD plus I got a test with my depo last month.

I'm not sure if this is a period or not. If it is then why am I having one after 3 years and does that mean that my birth control isn't working?

Thanks for the advice!

Tisha-1 agony auntHi, the best source of information about your birth control method is the gynecologist who is providing it. But I have found some weblinks that have information on the depo-provera shot. It seems that irregular bleeding is not uncommon in the list of side effects.

But if this is a new and recent change, I would make an appointment to discuss it with your doctor. There may be something else going on that isn't an STD.
