It sounds strange to me, I would imagine if he liked you he would ask you out for dinner, not to his young child's birthday party.

Are you the babysitter perhaps?
Or is he looking FOR a babysitter (in a sense) at the party to help out with the little one?
Or maybe he has asked some of the people from the church that he socialize with, to come.
Have you asked him why?

In answer to your question, possibly. I take it that you are interested in him. A little strange to be asked to a three-year-old's birthday though, unless you too have a child around that age. If that is the case it could be no more than a youngster's birthday party.
See what comes next.
