Went to my doctors recently and he told me I should go on birth control, he suggested the pill but I explained I had tried them before and I didn't like them (I don't really like taking tablets regularly). He then suggested the implant, at first I thought what a great idea, nothing to remeber and better than the pill. He told me to think about it and said he would write on my notes I would let them know what I decided. So I spent a week mulling it over and reading comments but they all seemed quite mixed. In the end I decided I would go for it, so I booked my self into the doctors only to find I have to go to my local hospital to have it done! At this point I was changing my mind, appointments don't exist it's a case of drop in on one of the three days they are open and hope I get to see someone. Their hours are 6 till 8 which means I have to drive past the hospital to go back again later. And I figured what if it doesn't agree with me and I want it removed! I have to wait till Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and hope I get in. At this point it really lost its shine, then I planned to go Monday but life intervened then on Tuesday and again life got in the way, now all this postponing has put me off more and I no longer want to go even though I no I should. my bf was happy for me to do something like this and has mentioned it in the past for extra protection. He is dissappointed now I'm not going through with it but still supportive. Does anyone have any experience with the implant who could help change my mind, feeling a bit down about it all really. Thanks

I've been with my bf for five years so felt a long term plan would be good so we can both finish our education.
Thanks again for you answers I will keep reading about it to calm my nerves. :)

while there may be some side effects for certain people, these are really in the minority, for me it means having a certain peace of mind (not having to worry about getting pregnant OR remembering to take a pill every day), also for me the added benefit was it basically stopped my periods which is quite convenient, I would thoroughly recommend to anyone who is in a committed relationship not looking to have kids in the next 3 years!

I had no side effects from it other than it aggravated my adult cystic acne (a condition I already had so if you don't already you should be fine). That is the only reason I got it removed and I'm on contraceptive pills which help acne now (marvelon which is brill). In terms of getting it fitted, it was no worse than a blood test or anything. It just requires someone with training to fit it, which my GP has so I'm lucky, and it's over really quickly. Getting it removed took a little bit longer because the tissue in your arm starts to grow around it a bit once it's got used to it, but again wasn't bad or sore really. All in all I found it was a really good form of contraception and I would recommend it, but it's entirely up to you. Everyone is different and if you're not comfortable then don't do it. Your boyfriend will just need to suck it up:)
