What's marriage? Something proven by a piece of paper? Of course ... legally, but not spiritually! The real question you wanted to ask is why would one want to be abstinent before engaging into a (permanent) commitment? Should such a person be regarded as morally better than those who don't take such a path? What are the reasons for *sex without commitment* to be regarded as OK and even advisable? If you ask me ... any sex is a marriage, and the breakup a divorce ... so how many times you want to fail in *marriage*? That's the answer you're looking for ...

A male reader, DoubleM United States +, writes (5 February 2009):

DoubleM agony auntCertainly! No sex before marriage is perfectly fine, and above all, undoubtedly the most prudent course in some cases. The problem is, it is no longer the reality to which most couples in the Western World adhere. On the other hand, what if a woman discovers, only after marriage, that her husband is a complete dork in the sack, will never improve, and may never be able to please her? Sexuality and satisfaction are very important aspects to living.

So, if a woman has little or no certainty that her man can really please her, which is too often the case - she may live an unsatisfied life sexually, maybe churn out a few babies, and settle for a much less fulfilling existence. We only live once. The fact is that many, if not most men are a cluttz in the bedroom and are unlikely to do much better. It is up to a woman to decide if she wants a test-drive in that category of life before she commits to the future.

FountainOfIndifference agony auntI find your question rather oddly worded. Is sex before marriage possible? Yes.

It's like how people, "oh no, you can't jump off that cliff!" In truth, it's actually quite physically possible to jump off a cliff. It isn't really that hard, seeing as how the laws of gravity apply to you, even when you are jumping off a cliff.

Perhaps a better word to use in such situations would be 'should.' And thus, do I think that you 'should' have sex before marriage?

Safe sex, I suppose. I've always been of the opinion that you should only have children after you get married. But other than that, I'm rather neutral on everything else.
