It is possible and common for women to experience period like bleeding when pregnant. However, when hCG is released into the body it tells the ovaries to release progesterone which prevents menstruation. In fact, a very big reason many women do not realize they are pregnant until many weeks later is because they believe they are having a period when in fact it is really not a period. Bleeding during pregnancy may last days or throughout the entire pregnancy.

The previous post is incorrect. You usually don't get periods when you are pregnant. In the days before pregnancy tests women tended to suspect they were pregnant when they missed one or two periods. You shed the lining of the womb each period that was prepared for a potential baby (if an egg was fertilised). When that doesn't happen the lining needs to be released from the body so that the whole process can start over again. However, some pregnant women do have bleeding which can be the sign of a miscarriage or pregnancy complication. A little bleeding is not that unusual in pregnant women who go on to have perfectly healthy babies but it needs to be checked out all the same. There are rare cases where women report having periods and being pregnant but this is very rare! After you give birth, your periods will often not return for several months particularly if you breast feed a baby.
