A male reader, anonymous, writes (3 October 2009):

Assuming we're not counting homosexual sex, the overall "average" number technically has to be even between the two genders because that's just mathematically how averages work.

But if you graphed it all out, I think the pictures would be different. I think men are more prone to being at the high & low edges of the curve compared to women.

baddogbj agony auntHow would that work, assuming a standard one man - one woman arrangement? On average woman have about as many sexual partners as men.

Very few non-professionals will ever see quadruple figures. It is certainly not something that you should aspire to.

There is also a counting technicality here in that under certain conventions you only count a 1/2 for someone that you have only had sex with as part of a threesome :-)

Actually, women and men have the same amount of partners. There are a lot of guys who brag to make themselves sound like they've been with more women, just as there are a lot of women who have been with more men than they care to admit because they fear being labelled as a slut. I really wouldn't let it worry you.

LazyGuy agony auntWell, logic would dictate that since sex is mostly 1 on 1, that sex is evenly distrubted between the sexes.

And since women typically start earlier, if a woman is the same age, then it is common for her to have more experience.

Women just don't tend to brag about it. Lets face it, you know of hefner who makes this claim, but you could go to any red-light district and find dozens of women with similar numbers.

A reader, anonymous, writes (3 October 2009):

OK, so Hefner may be an annomoly... he was rich (went broke and his daughter re-built the empire), and had young women who knew that getting his support could make them a playmate, and rocket them to big money. It makes sense that he could have 3 or 4 women a night...

I'm not sure that there's a real answer to this. First, women could (if they wanted to) get laid more simply by putting it out there... men will always seek out a woman (good looking our not) who wants to play. Guys, in general are not that lucky, but a minority of them have women throwing themselves at them...

Who knows... I bet you could pole 100 couples and it wuld be 50%/50% as to if the man or woman had more partners.
