Well after about a week I caved in and started talking to him again. Word got around and he found out about the promise and how I lied to her. Now he's mad at me. Before all this he did some pretty horrible things to me and I forgave him and we were fine, but now that I broke a promise to one of my friends he's mad at me and I didn't do anything to him! I don't know what to do, I talked to my friend and she said she doesn't trust me anymore but we're still friends and I can gain her trust back with lots of hard work. But what do I do about him? Do I try to get him to forgive me or do I just give up on him?

It seems you should give up on him. Look at it this way: you promised your friend you wouldn't be talking to him. You didn't keep your word, because you feel for him. Why should he be mad at you? Did you do anything against him? What about the time when you forgave him? If he can't see this, I'm afraid he's not worth your time.
About your friend, I think she shouldn't be mad at you, either. You did what you did out of love, I guess.
Take care.
