writes: Hi, I need help! I am currently at university studying health care. I want to be a social worker in order for me to this and I need to do a postgraduate degree in social work but to apply for the social work degree I need at least 6 months voluntary work in a social work setting. I also have a part time job which gives me about £500 a month (I know brill part time job). Thing is I had a volunteer work interview with a really good company and I got accepted (this will be brilliant for when applying for postgrad social work) but I need to do training for it this week: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, I asked the assistant manager if this was ok and because the rota wasn't up yet he said yes, however the rota is now up and I don't have those days off. When asking for them again my manager said it was impossible and my only options are to resign or to work the days. So what do I do? Keep my job and miss out on the volunteering experience or do the volunteering but miss out on £500 a month! The only other problem is because of the current credit crunch I doubt I'll be able to find another part time job. As much help as possible would be appreciated!

Well it all comes down to... do you need the money?
If you need to pay bills etc than keep working and then just wait till summer to do your volunteering when you have more time off.
If you don't need the money but just like it then talk to your manager and tell him you need to concentrate on your career, that you'd be happy to do any other shifts he has or even just cover sick days etc every now and then but that you are going to have to quit.
He may realise he's going to lose a good worker and compromise, he may say he'll give you a call for the odd shift now and then, or he may shrug his shoulders and let you go.
The other option is to talk to the company you are volunteering with and see if they can change your shifts? If you are doing it for free then they could try to be a bit more accommodating.
Either that or look for other volunteer work, there are hundreds of homeless shelters and nursing homes and hospitals and youth groups that need volunteers, surely one of them would count for your post grad?
Good Luck!! xx
