reader, anonymous, writes (17 August 2010): Yes, you have to resit the test. You can still drive on your english licence but only for 3-6 months I believe.
Don't worry about it though, american driving tests are ridiculously easy. If you passed in the UK then you can do the american test in your sleep!
I did my american test in NC and it took about 10 min. No roundabouts, no parallel parking, no reversing around corners... just drive around the neighbourhood once (didn't even meet any oncoming traffic!).
