And he seems interested in hanging out in the future as well. But how can I tell if someone is just being nice and friendly in comparison to someone who is interested?

 Only one way to sort it out. Ask him straight out. Take the first move guys love that. If your shy just give him a text and ask him out on a date. If he says no it may dent your confidence but at least then you will have your answer and you can move on. Good luck.
