I broke up with my girlfriend after high school and ended up getting back together with her about 7 years later. It was one of the worst mistakes of my life.

I have not done this, but based on my recent break-up I have spoken to a few people who have. I know of 3 women who admitted to me that they got scared and 'freaked out' and broke it off. All of them regretted it, and one of them was able to get back with her ex and ended up marrying him. They actually split and got back together 2 or 3 times.
Another got back with her ex, but he broke up with her when she moved for her career, and he didn't want to go, but I know both still have very strong feelings for each other. After their first split, they didn't even talk for at least 6 months.
The last one regretted it and wanted to go back to her ex about a year later, and unfortunately for her, he had moved on by then. But she tells me that she would get back with him to this day, if the opportunity arose.
So yes, it does happen, sometimes people make decisions based on fear or bad information or whatever, but they are human, and mistakes are just that, mistakes.
Anyway, hope this helped.

I have. I was dating a guy for 3 months, then a bunch of rumors started going around that I had been with a bunch of people (which wasn't true) so I told him he either believes it or is losing me. He said he didn't want to lose me, but I ended up breaking up with him. Your first response is that you're okay with the situation. Then later on it dwells on you. I broke up with him that night, was totally fine. The next morning I missed him and started crying and he finally took me back that next night.
