Well, you sort of put him back on the market, so I would move on. I question the value of a friendship where people go out with someone a friend was interested in or dating, but that's up to you.
Aside from that I recommend you move on. The "What-ifs" and "Did-hes" aren't something anyone hear can answer, not having known him and aren't really important. Wondering about them prevents you from moving forward.
