I myself have experienced similar problems to this.
Your friend really likes this girl. He wants to admit this to everyone but he is scared of what people will think of him. She wants to be with him and would do anything for him, but is fed up with him telling people that he doesn't like her when everyone knows it's not true. People might treat him differently to what he used to be, to what he shall be. He shouldn't be bothered what people think. If he wants her, he should show it. He hasn't blown it if she fancys him still. If she doesn't, he's blown his chance.
