Question - (19 September 2008) 3 Answers - (Newest, 22 September 2008)
A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I've, as most everyone one has, heard the rumors about contraception and sex. I've had quite a few lies told to me by even teachers, and even more by peers. I would like to know simply the facts.

If, and this is still only a thought on the horizon for me, I were to copulate with a male and use a condom, right close to after I end my period, what are the chances of conception?

I know that it's rather improper to do things of this nature when one is not prepared for the consequences (I'm not set up to be another Juno) or willing to abort but... I would just like to know.

Dear Aunties, Uncles, I would like to seek your advice. I'm a bit paranoid, extraordinarily precautios and would like to at least be out of college before I bring another creature into this grand world.

Thank you so much

A male reader, anonymous, writes (22 September 2008):

It's possible to get pregnant basically ANY time you have vaginal intercourse.

You could be near your period, or occasionally even on it depending on the girl and the situation.

At least some minor possibility exists even if he doesn't have an orgasm inside you because of sperm in the small amount of lubricating "pre-cum" that his penis makes.

And you should also realise that as a teenager, you are as fertile as you'll ever be in your life. Don't try to judge how easy it is to get pregnant from unprotected sex based on the actions of other full-grown women in their 20s or 30s or 40s. Because you might be unpleasantly suprised with how much easier it is for someone your age to get knocked up than they were.

But condoms and birth control generally work. The vast, VAST majority that people get pregnant while (supposedly) on birth control, there was really a lapse in the protection and they just won't admit it. Or they didn't use a condom correctly. Condoms essentially never leak semen through the material, but that doesn't mean the semen won't leak out the bottom or the whole thing come off his penis inside you.

I hope all this helps.

A female reader, roxygirl United States +, writes (20 September 2008):

I do have to say that it is good you are trying to get the facts, but you are still young and I definitely would not rush into anything just yet.

Obviously the best way to avoid teen pregnancy is abstinence, but if you want to have sex, I would ALWAYS use both a condom and birth control. Teenage boys can play with your head just to get in your pants, so I would just be extremely careful with whom and when you decide to have sex.

I also respect your morals and would suggest sticking to them as much as possible until you graduate college.

Hope this helps!

A female reader, Tremor Australia +, writes (20 September 2008):

Tremor agony auntUsing a condom at /any/ time during your cycle will greatly reduce your risk of pregnancy and STDS if you use it correctly - That is, get the right size, apply it properly, and use a lot of lubricant to prevent it splitting.

Good on you for wanting to ge the facts and not relying on word of mouth. I've heard some really great conteaception theories, it's amazing what people come up with.

Good luck to you.
