reader, anonymous, writes (1 December 2009): A lot of rejection can be eliminated by making a connection with the eyes first. Most girls are comfortable holding eye contact, while most guys aren't. But you need to get over it.
To do it, all you do is keep your head up (don't look at her like you're hunting prey!), and look into one of her eyes.
The first time you make eye contact, she must be the one to look away first. 2-3 minutes later, search for her face again. Now it's ok to break eye contact if you have reason to do so.
You can continue to play this game. Eye contact can be very brief now. If she made prolonged eye contact more than once, then that is a good sign. The chances of her liking you go up the more times she has made eye contact.
