A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I started wearing colored contact lenses when I was 17, I haven't been able to stop 5 years later. It's become a crazy addiction and I can't stop wearing them. I wear them everyday I can't go anywhere without them. I am not an ugly girl (not being conceited) I received a lot of attention when I didn't wear them but now I liked how I looked with them better. Now I have the biggest problem that so many people think they are my eyes. Help I need some serious help :( I don't know how to stop.

Your colored contacts make you feel vibrant and confident. Without them you feel naked and exposed.

Have you tried maybe experimenting with vibrant makeup, hair, or nail color? Maybe you can find another way to stand out and build cosmetic confidence. Once you find something that works, you can try going without the contacts or maybe switching to somwthing closer to your natural eye color.

Finally, I think dark chocolate brown eyes are beautiful. My niece, (my little brother's daughter) has beautiful dark chocolate brown eyes. She is the most adorable little girl and it is because of her eyes.

There was this chinese girl in my school who wore these ridiculously blue eye contacts she looked incredibly supernaturally stupid with them but we never could tell her. Perhaps it's a similar situation here - everyone knows they just don't want to offend you .

It sounds absolutely ridiculous yesterday my contact ripped I was 20 minutes late to work because I just could not go with my natural eye color. I feel very unattractive and I can't even stare into people's face. My eyes are chocolate brown super dark so when I don't wear my contacts they look smaller obviously because of the color I guess I need to stop thinking about others and worry about myself for once. Thanks for your opinions !

chigirl agony auntThis isn't a big problem. People wont really care, or die, or abandon you, if they find out what your real eye colour is. Really. People don't really care that much. Most people don't stare into your eyes for long enough to even remember your eye colour.

Next, you certainly CAN go without the contacts. It is not physically impossible. You just don't WANT to do it. But you can. And if you find enough willpower in you to actually want it, you can do it.

If you think your problem is very serious, then you need to see a professional for help. Start by seeing your doctor and ask for help there. But, if it is not so serious that you are willing to consult with your doctor then it really isn't serious, and you are perfectly capable of just making up your mind and go without. It might feel weird, at most, but then you'll get over it.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (16 April 2013):

I don't understand, have you been telling people that the contacts were your natural eyes? Or implying that they are by not saying anything when people complimented you? Because if that's the case I suppose the problem is more the embarrassment of having told a little white lie rather than revealing your natural eye colour!

It's not that big a deal though, people dye their hair all the time and nobody gets too bothered if they find out that a person they thought was a brunette is actually a blonde.

Just don't wear them one day as though it's no big deal, and if people ask just be like 'oh yeah, this is my natural eye colour, didn't you know?' and then just shrug it off as though it's a non-issue. Which it is anyway really. And even when people know what your natural eye colour is, there's nothing to stop you having a day here and there when you still wear the contacts if you like the look of them. The only difference is that people will know they're contacts now.

And anyway, if you don't really need them and it's purely cosmetic, I don't think it's good for your eyes to have worn contacts for that long without giving them a break. It's probably better to give your eyes a bit of a rest.

It's a shame April Fools day has just passed. You could have gone in without them like 'tada! I had you all fooled for 5 years about my natural eye colour!'... Suppose there's always next year.
