 Yes, it is possible to get pregnant while on your period, though it is less likely.
The short explanation is that women's cycles vary quite a bit...so even though your period has started, you might be at different points of egg-dropping and egg-shedding. You can get home kits that will tell you better when you are ovulating and when your "safe" days are, but overall, it is far better to be truly safe and go birth control or always use a condom.
