You class him as a friend and im sure vice versa, some are closer than others some just get along as they have to. You obviously want him as a friend so why not try talking to him more, next time you get the opportunity to talk go out of your way to have a genuine conversation.
You mention the words long distance relationship i take it you like this guy quite a lot if you want more youve got to take action! people let good things go to waste pondering on the little issues that wont make a difference. Maybe he ignores you because he has no idea how you feel? if you told him things could be a lot different, youll never know if you never take the plunge that could change it all for the better!
