I was told to wait only a week before having sex by my doctor and the nurse practictioner that gave me the shot. I was also told it can eventually stop my cycle. I was due to start somewhere around the ninth and i was wondering if the depo shot could stop my period the first month im on it? I didnt think it could but am a little worried since i havent started, but could it also be the hormones in the shot that would make me irregular? Thats my best guess. Im planning on taking a pregnancy test in a week and half if i havent gotten it. Advice please?

I wouldn't worry at all. Also 1 week is what I have been told as well and I completely trust this to be true after a quick check on the internet as well.

Yes Depo shot can mess up your normal cycle, but it should go back to normal. I would suggest that you don't just wait a week but use condoms for at least 3 months til your body has accepted the hormones from Depo.

Of course it can. You'd hope it would impact your cycle the first month! If it can stop your ovulation, it can also stop menstruation.

A pregnancy test in a week wouldn't be a half bad idea.
However, remember with the Depo shot, it's supposed to remain in your system for 3 months. Isn't that how it's administered? A shot every 3 months? What it does is it loads you up on hormones to last 3 months (essentially). That's why the depo shot produces the most side effects verus all the other methods of birth control. It's possible that the load of hormones has stopped your cycle or has made your period irregular.
Check with the Nurse Practitioner about that. Or it might be worth checking out the depo instructional/warning pamphlet that comes with it. If you don't have it, you can download it online. The NP will tell you if it's a good idea to check with a pregnancy test.
