writes: Can intercourse bring on breakthrough bleeding when on the pill? The last time I had sex with my boyfriend, I bled. I had just started on a birth control pill, and I was wondering if it was breakthrough bleeding that was brought on by intercourse... if that happens. We weren't rough at all, and the next day, I didn't bleed anymore... We haven't had sex in over a month because of this. He thinks he hurt me, plus, I think that the blood was disgusting to him. I am afraid to have sex too because neither of us liked the blood, and I just don't want the same thing to happen again. We still have a healthy, loving relationship... we just don't have sex.

If it wasn't rough sex it was probably just the hormonal effects of a new pill. Some of them can cause you to bleed non stop for a month before your cycle settles down, others cause random days of spotting or full on bleeding. Some don't affect you at all.
I'd mention it to your doctor when you next visit, not because it's anything to worry about but because they'll be able to explain the sciencey reasons behind this much better than I can but basically the reason it happens is because the pill introduces a higher level of hormone into your blood which your body adapts to in different ways. That's why you might also have painful breasts or put on weight when you first take the pill.
