Can heart medication destroy the male sex drive?

My boyfriend takes half a Atehexal 50mg tablet each day for an irregular heartbeat. The active ingredient is atenolol. The leaflet inside the packet lists "Problems with sexual function" as one of the possible side effects. My partner uses this as his excuse for a reduced sex drive but hasn't been to the doctor about it.

So can this drug seriously cause a reduced sex drive as in desire for sex?

DoubleM agony auntAbsolutely, atenolol can at least cause erectile dysfunction (inability to achieve or maintain an erection), and as a 60-year-old heart attack patient who requires atenolol for maintaining a slower heart rate, I speak with experience.

However, my personal experience has been that after four years of taking the drug, the symptoms came on rather suddenly and only recently. For me, it had no affect on desire (sex drive) - just the ability to get hard enough for intercourse. And it seems to be just an occasional thing, but everyone is different. The solution is Viagra or Cialis, which for me has totally solved the problem numerous times since January. A doctor would need to determine it's safety for the patient and prescribe, at least in America. Aussie laws may be more permissive. Again, some guys may be different, but for me the desire remained - only the physical inability was a problem at times.
