A female United Kingdom age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Hey the new facebook 'seen' feature has me in a quandry. Looked up and messaged an ex boyfriend, no reply, was surprised then saw recently that it was never 'seen'.

What now? Is this feature reliable? Don't want to message again in case it was seen and he doesn't want to get in touch! Thanks

I have actually just thought of something, the message probably went into the 'Other' folder, that is where messages from people who are not friends go to. He might never see it!

Right, so the chances are the message was never opened? I don't want to make a big issue of this , just don't want to look crazy if I send another message!

Don't read anything into it. Even if it was 'seen' it could just mean he's busy or wants to think about it first.

I have about 10 unread Facebook messages at the moment I never read them. even when I do unless it's important I may not reply straight away. Especially if it's an ex, they're unimportant so I don't have to reply straight away or even at all.

Don't be so quick to judge this negatively.

AuntyEm agony auntNo you misunderstood. The new app does not allow a person to mark a message as 'unread' it just means he hasn't logged in and seen the message yet...as soon as he logs in the status will change to 'read'.

Hey thanks for your replies!

I don't have any other way to contact him, I would like to get in contact but if he has marked it as unread I guess he doesn't want to talk to me,I probably should just leave it wait and see?

AuntyEm agony aunt'When someone sees your most recent message, it will be marked as seen. That way, you always know who got the message, and who didn't.

Messages are marked as seen if the person is actively chatting or checking their messages.

This feature is part of every message you send, whether it's from your phone or the web.'

This is what it says on the help page of the new app.

Looks like the person you are trying to contact doesn't check their messages regularly. Maybe give it a little more time. Maybe FB isn't the most reliable way to contact him?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (12 November 2012):

Hey, I'm not sure if it will mark it as unseen to the sender but there is an option in the proper private message section that allows you to mark the message as unread, he may have done that after reading it, but as I said, I have no idea if that will change it to unread for you or not!
