writes: Hi, my i broke up with my girlfriend a couple of months ago but we've been continuing the physical side (not full sex, just everything else). She went on the pill for the first time about a month ago and after about the first 21 days we were just foolin around and sort of rubbed up against each other a bit coz we thought it was pretty safe to do so. Now shes saying her period is late so she took a pregnancy test which said positive! Shes booked in to see a doctor but im freakin out a bit coz im really not wanting a kid right now at all (im still at university). Is it even possible that she is pregnant?? Is it not unheard of that this might happen in these circumstances? She was ill for a while near the beginning of taking the pill (unrelated to pill) and was sick quite a bit but does this mean it became less effective?

Hi Guy,
There is an old saying that men must be responsible for birth control, and you are learning why. First of all, yes it is possible. Secondly, its in her body now, and you must be prepared to be supportive regardless of what she decides. If she goes through the abortion, help her financially, and be there for her in the room to hold her hand if she needs you there. If she decides to have the child, you need to be there as well, financially, emotionally or physically, not for her sake, but for the sake of your kid.
All that being said, I also urge you to have a paternaty test done when the child is born. Fact is, that it may not be yours. After all, you were not a couple at the time, and it is not like she'd have cheated. Let her know that you want a paternaty test done, but that you are going to be there UNTIL the test results come back that you are not the father.

Antibiotics make the pill less effective if she was taking those, she could be pregnant from the last time you had intercourse....if you doubt you are the father there is always a paternity test.
I hope you do the right thing and help your girlfriend in the decision about this pregnancy, and I hope you have learned a lesson about all of this, like don't fool around with your ex and always use protection.
