I think once you gradually introduce yourself back into the world it will become easier to interact with people. Take a spinning class, join book clubs, go to church, and force yourself to "small talk". Little steps will boost your self-esteem.

Take a piece of paper and a pen, write down all your thoughts, and try to do it as often as possible. Then get to the nearest city where you don't know anyone, have a cup of coffee and watch the others. Try to find a club of anything that could interest you in that same city (get a library card, go swimming, volunteer, anything!).
In a few weeks, you'll have some new perspective in your life. At that point, pick up the phone and call your old friends, or write a letter.
You'll feel a thousand times better then.
