I lived in the states for 24 years and now live in Saudi. Theres many reasons why I moved and for the safety and protection from any potential verbal hateful onslaught I wont mention any reasons as to why on this board. My experiences in the states with jobs, religion, and personal life were somewhat different than most ppl so chances are I may not be of help. Best I can advise is to think long term and not short term and make sure you are confident and ready for your decision. Good luck.

CindyCares agony auntI have lived 10 years in New York and they have been the happiest years in my life. It's not for everybody though. You either love New York or you hate it. I loved it so much. I am very happy about where I live now - probably the most beautiful town in Italy- and yet, any time I see on TV the Manhattan skyline - it sorts of bring tears to my eyes.

After this "Manhattan love song " let's come to your dilemma. Expensive ? Yes, it is very expensive. Worth it- but expensive. Particularly for rent . Be prepared to invest a big chunk of your pay for a barely semi-decent accomodation.

As for you being Muslim- there are loads of Muslims there. And of anybody else. NY is a very diverse, multicultural, open minded, intellectually sophisticated place. NY people live and let live- they are used to hosting people from any possible country ,religion and walk of life. And,contrariously to popular belief, they are also friendly and helpful to newcomers. So from this point of you you should have no problems.

xanthic agony auntI've lived in New York my entire life, and consider myself lucky to live in such a diverse city and be able to experience so many different cultures in one place. In my experience, it has a very accepting atmosphere, so no worries there.

Unfortunately, many jobs are hard to come by right now and it's definitely an expensive place to live. Rent can be very high, even if living in a one-room apartment or with other people.

New York is the biggest, most amazing city I've been to. It is a melting pot of cultures. Nobody would harrass you in NYC for your culture. In a small unsophisticated American town, maybe... but not in NYC. NYC is for EVERYONE. And its HUGE. But yes, it is expensive. Do not plan on having a car, it would be very expensive and the navigating in traffic would be very aggravating. Everyone in NYC uses the subway, its by far the best way of transportation there. In other American cities you would want to have a car, but not in NYC. I've heard the pay is good in NYC, but the cost of living is also high. But it would probably look great on your resume (your C.V.)
