Are there any safety concerns in being a nudist?

A male United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

When I am home alone, I enjoy walking around completely nude. For me, there is nothing sexual about it, I just don't like wearing clothes. I am just wondering if this is a sign of something wrong with me mentality or is normal for some people to enjoy walking around nude?

There is a nudist camp near my house (about 45 minutes away if there is no traffic). I would actually love to try it out. Is there any safety concerns I need to be know about before I go?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (12 September 2016):

I have been a nudist for over 10 years, so I can share some of my experiences.

I don't really agree with what Janniepeg said.

She probably went with her partner, so she did not have to worry about unwanted advances from men there. I once went to a nude beach in Australia alone. I made a mistake of chatting with a man there who later started stalking me at home and at work. I had to get a restraining order against him.

But since you are a guy, you probably don't have to worry about that. Most nudist clubs I have been to do not admit single men but from my experience these are usually in the USA, UK or Australia. Unless you live in Europe you need to be a member of a nudist club to use their facilities unlike in Europe where nude recreation is available to the public.

European cultures tend to be more laid back about casual nudity. In Germany I don't think the concept of nudists even exists. Nudity is completely normal and non sexual there. I worked in Germany forfsix years went to the thermal spa every weekend for 6 years. I often went there alone. It was a coed sauna.

Nothing bad ever happened to me. I sometimes went with my friends and colleagues. Even met my male boss there several times. It was completely safe and the people were very friendly. I never once worried about people taking my nude pictures and posting them on the internet. I never worried about being judged by people or jeopardizing my career.

The same cannot be said of where I come from. We have much to learn from the people of the so called Old World.

It depends where you live. If you live in Asia where society is conservative, good luck to you.

A female reader, YouWish United States +, writes (12 September 2016):

YouWish agony auntAhh - sorry! One thing to keep in mind, you didn't mention your relationship status. Some nudist colonies or resorts are actually biased towards single people who are "first timers", men in particular. Expect some scrutiny at first based on your lack of experience. Have your reasons ready to go when asked. YOU may not be a creep, but there are those guys who are, and the owners/managers are the gatekeepers of safety for the membership.

Also before going, you may want to be a "card carrying nudist", meaning you'll put the "gatekeepers" at ease with memberships to places like AANR (American Association for Nude Recreation) and TNS (The Naturist Society). Check out those websites for not only membership but other places to join in. This will bolster your intentions and show that you're not there to ogle people or anything else.

There are a few colonies who refuse anyone who ISN'T a member of a nudist organization like TNS.

Hope this helps! Let me add the links!

**Mod note - some non-sexual nudity on these sites**

A female reader, YouWish United States +, writes (12 September 2016):

YouWish agony auntThere's nothing wrong with you! I've never known anyone who was a social nudist, but the dad of a friend of mine when I was a kid preferred to be nude in his own home. He was very nice and had clothes on when I visited. He was not a pervert or creepy, on the contrary, he was very holistic and earthy.

You might want to give the colony a call to find out what their rules of propriety and etiquette are for that place. I'm not a nudist, but I have been to Japanese onsen before, which has a set of rules to follow that differ from place to place.

Like WiseOwle said, if this colony is outdoors, you will want to consider insect repellent and excellent personal hygiene.

I'm guessing you'll find many people like yourself at the colony. Good luck!

A reader, anonymous, writes (12 September 2016):

The only health issues I can think of is sunburn, insect bites, or poison ivy. Don't run through a field of briars;

and do not be visible to children or the authorities.

You're not likely to take a stroll on a snowy wintry day; I'm certain the temperature and climate will discourage any unhealthy practices.

Please only be nude where it's legal and acceptable. Hopefully you won't develop a desire to expose yourself in inappropriate situations.

Home is the safest and best place of all. Where your right to privacy allows you to do most anything you wish.

If you conduct yourself properly and only express your freedom where it is legal, and shared with other adults who enjoy the freedom of not wearing clothes. I guess there are no health risks. If you choose to make it sexual; then take the usual precaution of using a condom. Little Jimmie should always wear a raincoat when he decides to play; even if you otherwise aren't wearing a stitch. You may see no sexual purpose in nudity, you may inadvertently attract others who do. It's the inevitable primitive nature of human behavior.

Letting it all hang out in itself has no particular health-risks. Some Indigenous tribes live their entire lives in the nude.

If I may presume you are heterosexual, make sure you can control your male propensities in the presence of nude women, especially when they are accompanied by their male companions. If you're not, same goes for other males. That might keep you healthy as well.

Tisha-1 agony auntWear sunscreen and bring a towel to sit on, in the nudist camp. Beyond that as long as you aren't exposing genitals to minors, what you do in your home is up to you.

A female reader, janniepeg Canada +, writes (12 September 2016):

janniepeg agony auntNone. I went to Harbin Hot Springs in Northern California and it was one of the most peaceful places you can be in. It would be ideal to go as a couple. If you are alone you don't need to be pressured to socialize with others. What kind of concerns do you have? Being harassed? Water quality? Most people go to nudist camp for spiritual healing, to feel comfortable in their own skin, and to feel at one with nature.
