If you are thirteen to fifteen, don't use the pills, they will muck up your undeveloped body

You don't have to starve yourself or start eating an unhealthily small amout to be on a diet. Substituting fatty foods and processed food for fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, etc, is an excellent start. Cut out the crisps, sweets, fizzy drinks as much as you can- you don't need to give them up completely though, just have them as a treat. I think though that the real key is upping exercise levels- this will get your metabolism up as well as helping you burn off calories. Try walking, swimming, or sociable games like badminton or tennis. There are loads of options which will bring sustainable weight loss, something which pills will not. Besides, you are too young for these types of drugs I think- a change in lifestyle will be far more effective at your age. Good luck and be positive! The results will no be instant but keep going and you will see a difference for sure.

k_c100 agony auntPills dont work if you want to lose weight - they have nasty side effects and as soon as you stop taking them you will put the weight all back on again! Do you actually know how weight loss pills work? They stop you from absorbing the fat in your food, but when you do eat fat then it comes back out of your body, normally in the form of nasty diarreha! So you have to go on a diet to make sure the pills work - you cannot eat normally and expect them to work! You would just be very ill. So if you are not allowed to follow a diet then taking pills will not work at all, you must be on a diet to see them work.

Why are you not allowed to follow diets? Who has told you that? I am a huge believer that the only way you can lose weight is by eating less and exercising more. That is not a diet - it is just a sensible way of living.

I am 5"3 and at my heaviest I weighed 11 stone 10lbs (I looked like a whale!). I have now lost nearly a stone and a half and I would like to get down to 9st. It has taken me a few months and at times it is hard work but I'm slowly getting closer to where I want to be. I have lost this weight without going on a diet, without starving myself, without pills and without surgery.

What I have done to lose the weight is make my portions smaller, I eat carbs only during the day (none with dinner), I have cut out white food apart from milk (no white bread, pasta, rice etc - swap it for brown), and I exercise a hell of a lot. It is the exercise that makes the real difference - I go jogging, I go to the gym, I walk for about 40 minutes each day...all these have really helped me lose the weight.

Pills really wont work, I promise you. They are very very expensive (not sure how much they will be in the US but over here in the UK they cost about £30 per month) so why spend all that money on pills that make you ill every time you eat something other than salad when you can get out in the fresh air and go for a run, or go to your local pool and have a swim?

A healthy lifestyle will ensure you lose weight, and keep that weight off forever with no nasty side effects. If you want to explain why you cant diet that might help, I may be able to give you some more advice on what you can do.

Pills are dangerous and NEVER work.

You say you are not allowed to follow diets but how is anyone going to stop you from eating fruit rather than crisps and sweets?

How is anyone stopping you from having a good dance in your bedroom, or going for a walk or going swimming?

Diets, don't need to involve drastic things. They just need to involve a bit less fat and sugar, and a bit more healthy stuff.

Little changes really do make a difference. Exercise is the best thing you can do. Just take a dog for a walk every night and you will see the difference.

Good Luck!! xx

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (6 August 2009):

DrPsych agony auntMany of the herbal remedies for weight loss that you see advertised in magazines and TV commercials are not clinically proven. I am not going to recommend diets - they are boring, short-term and sometimes dangerous if they are too calorie restricting. A healthy balanced diet is what is required along with some exercise. I don't think your weight makes you anything more than a little overweight for your height. The only clinically proven medication for obesity are the Orlistat group (marketed under various names). However, I think most doctors would be reluctant to prescribe due to your age and weight being too low. There are some horrible side-effects of this drug (toilet-horrors). You need to have a look at your lifestyle - if you are overweight because you are eating too much, adjust intake and exercise more. If you don't think you overeat, see a doctor to exclude any metabolic reasons for your weight like thyroid disorders. However it is not THAT bad so stop worrying about it and understand that your body is still growing so it may change with age (mine did).
