Are school nurses correct when they say it's IMPOSSIBLE to get pregnant on your period?

A female , anonymous writes:

I had unprotected sex with my bf on the first day of my period, a few hours after taking the Pill for the very first time. I took the ECP "Plan B" almost 48 hours later, and have continued to take my Pill at the right times (my gyno said that if I do that, there wouldn't be a need for the ECP but I took Plan B anyways, just to be sure). I am still bleeding from my period, but I know that you can have a regular period even if you've gotten pregnant from having sex during that time of menstruation. My periods are fairly normal, and very painful-- that's why I've started taking the pill.

As you can probably tell, I'm paranoid-- hence the precautions I've taken by calling my OB-GYN and getting Plan B. I still feel like I have that bad luck of being the 1 in a few hundred girls that could get pregnant no matter what they do.

I don't really feel like being preached to about STDs and unprotected sex, because I would've been more careful if my nurses throughout school hadn't told me that it's "IMPOSSIBLE to get pregnant on your period".

However, all input and help is extremely appreciated.

Thanks you guys.

A female reader, bonym United Kingdom +, writes (16 May 2006):

bonym agony auntGetting pregnant depends upon when your body is ovulating. I found this really good bit of information you should read: I found it off a useful source and I have pasted it from an article I was reading.

"Although it is very unlikely that you could become pregnant during your period, some women do ovulate when they are bleeding (which may not actually be a menstrual period), so it is remotely possible.

If you have a consistent menstrual cycle, with several days of bleeding every 27 to 31 days, you probably can't get pregnant during your period. However, if your cycle is irregular, you may mistake some bleeding for a period; if this is the case, you should consider yourself fertile at any time during your cycle. If your period lasts more than a week, you could possibly become pregnant if you engage in sexual intercourse toward the end of your period.

The days just after the end of your period can be the most fertile days of your cycle.

Unexpected bleeding can also be caused by small increases or decreases in your hormone levels. Because of this, artificial hormones (such as birth control pills, the Depo-provera "birth control shot", and Norplant) can interfere with your cycle. It can take your body several months to get back to normal after you are no longer exposed to these hormones. "

Sorry if I bored you to tears, but I hope it answers your question!! All the best xXx

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (16 May 2006):

DrPsych agony auntSchool nurse is definitely wrong on this one. It is less likely to get pregnant during your period, but sperm are nifty little fella's and can hang around for a couple of days. The most likely time to get pregnant is around mid-cycle (it is something like 10 days after your period for most women but remember every woman has a slightly different ovulation (egg release) cycle). As for the pill, the emergency one has most effectiveness within the first 24 hours but is generally effective until 72 hours. Great at preventing pregnancies, but not great for repeated use as it contains very high doses of progesterone hormone. The problem is that with taking that pill, and being on a lower dose regular contraceptive pill you may feel a bit poorly and may find that this period is longer than usual (and the next one). If you find that you don't get on with the prescribed pill go back to your doctor as there are different brands and types that suit different people.

As for period pain, the pill sometimes helps but if that doesn't work on you then you should be checked out for other causes of pain - endometriosis is one condition associated with pelvic pain around that time of the month. An ultrasound at the hospital can check out for uterine abnormalities associated with dire pain - polycystic ovaries, endometriosis and uterine structural abnormalities are surprisingly common amongst us ladies (I have all three) and can contribute to that killer pain.

Believe me you can get pregnant on your period... :|

Sounds like you are going to be fine though with the actions you have taken.

PS chlamydia is a bacteria and is 100% curable. It's dangerous though because in 75% of women (and 50% of men) there are no symptoms. If you are concerned about your history or your boyfriends, get yourself both checked out.

I think the other readers have been a bit harsh on you to be honest. Sounds to me you made a little mistake and have done the responsible thing by taking an emergency contraceptive... and no doubt you have learnt from this! :) Good luck in the future!

A female reader, willywombat United Kingdom +, writes (16 May 2006):

willywombat agony auntFirstly I cannot imagine why a trained health care professional would tell you it is impossible to get pregnant on your period. The chances are reduced but if you ahve unprotected sex then it is always a possiblility that you can get pregnant.

Secondly I know you do not want to be lectured about STD's etc, but obviously you do! Use a barrier method in conjuntion with your pill. Pregnancy is the least of your worries if you contract HIV or Hep B/C or any other of the myriad STD's *floating* around....after all if you get chlymidia you won't have to worry about pregnancy EVER. It will sort it all out for you.
