In reply to Olivia(Y) the reason you shouldn't use soap is that the chemicals in soap dissolve condoms. Anything that contains detergent or oil will damage the condom, so things like massage oil and baby oil also should be avoided.
If you use lube make sure it says condom safe.

Hi hun.
Condoms alone are ok. I agree with Army Medic that in tandem with spermicide...pretty good. There is, though a margin for error if they slip off or tear. There are more reliable forms of birth control out there but a condom should always be used for protection against stds in addition to whatever else you are using.
Remember that sleeping together is a big step and it is your body. Don't feel rushed. If you need the time to discuss your birth control options with your doctor, insist on it. It will be you who will be pregnant if the condoms fail. If he cares about you, he will be fine with this.

Condoms are safe as long as you use them properly.
This means you put them on correctly and don't put things like soap on them, don't ask why soap my doctor just said don't put soap on them :s
They do affectively protect you from STI's and Pregancy :)
Good luck

Condoms on their own are fine, as long as they're put on correctly and are still in date :) x

Yes condoms are 95% effective alone, you could choose to use a spermicide also to increase the effectiveness to around 98%.
Just make sure you use the condom properly.
