Anyone have any ideas of where I could start with that? I dont want all of it to be lovey dovey, practical would be a great thing too. Anyone who has been deployed or anyone who is going thru this have any ideas???

Also, if you send him cookies or other food, use unbuttered popcorn (in plastic food storage bags) as packing material instead of crumpled newspaper or bubblewrap. He & his friends can eat the popcorn as well as the other treats.
My father, who was in the Navy, taught me this. It works well for care packages to college students, too.

..Hi there, I don't know if they have to purchase stamps or not, but if they do, a coup;e of books of stamps would be nice. Also stationery or pads of writing paper and envelopes would be appreciated, I'm sure. A box of tasty hard candy should be good. Some raisins or dried fruits or canned nuts, if he likes them, or surely cookies would be delightful. Be sure to send him enough to share with his buddies. Just a few thoughts, hope they help. Take care.

Well am guessing you want to add a personal touch to it as well and show him that you care about him and miss him. Hand made things are a good thing to start with they are cheap and it shows you that you put in the effort for him as well. So maybe think of a few things that you could make up that adds that personal touch and love and care.
Maybe some essential gifts that you think he may need can include a phone with an afganistan sim card. Maybe a digital camera so he can capture some of his memories while he is deployed. Maybe even a good shock proof and stable watch. If he is in to reading maybe you could buy him an E book reader so that he has something to pass the time with or if he is more in to games maybe a hand held console like the PSP or NDS.
Maybe write a letter to him from the heart to show him how much you care. Maybe something that will comfort him you could send him an item of clothing of yours and spray your perfume on it so that he feels close to you, and he has something when he is missing you. Maybe something small enough that he could carry with him while in uniform so that it reminds him of you, perhaps a keyring with a picture of you and him in it. Showing him that you care and are thinking about him will be the biggest gift off all for him.
