A female United Kingdom, anonymous writes:

I'd like to get some counselling or therapy to solve some problems I have about my past that are not going away. I've been thinking about this for some time but thought the problems would go away on their own. However, they haven't and I want to try something other than anti-depressants.

I've looked into therapy but it's very expensive and I was wondering if anyone reading this has done it before and what were their experiences of it. I would appreciate any information about therapy and counselling. Thank you.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (25 October 2005):

I had a councillor when I was in school for things that were happening and had happened to me, I was refered through a school nurse and therefore didn't have to pay any expenses, can I ask are you from the UK? Thats were I am from.

I found it very usefull to talk about things but I was very emotional, it would take me (at least) the rest of the day to recover and things wern't as bad as what alot of people go through but I was digging up alot of bad experiences.

I was talking a to councillor for a few months and in the end I realized that my farther wasn't worth knowing, I made up with my mother and we are as close as ever and he gave me numbers to help me and my partner find our own place.

I was offered anti-depresants, but I decided that I didn't want them and in my own time I stopped seeing him, I felt relieved of alot of pressure and like I was able to carry on with my life and put it all behind me because it wasn't my fault.

One or two sessions can't hurt now can it, but remember to give it time!

Bev Conolly agony auntAfter I separated from my first husband, I was fortunate to be recommended to free counselling services through my health-care. It might be worth checking.

Also, local governments at the City or Shire level will often provide low-cost counselling referrals for people with limited income. Look in the phone book government pages under "mental health" or a similar term. They should be able to advise you.

Speaking for myself, going for counselling was remarkably cleansing - worth the difficulty of tracking down.

Good luck. You're heading in the right direction.
