I always felt bad for leaving it up to him to make sure that we were protected and felt that the pressure of making sure of that was shared so I decided to go to the doctors to talk about different forms of contraception. At the doctors it was decided that the Mini Pill would be best for me as I suffer with horrendous migraines. The doctor didn't give me too much information other than that I should take the pill on the first day of my period. I went home and read the leaflet that was with the prescription which said that I should take the pill on the first day of my period and continue taking it at the same time everyday until I don't want to be on it any more. Well the day that I went to the doctors I had started my period a tiny bit so at 9pm I took my first pill. The next day I took the pill at 9pm and continued doing this. The problem is every since I took the first pill my period hasn't continued however I have still carried on taking it. I know the pill is 99% effective but will it still be effective even if I haven't taken it on the first day of my period. I have slept with my boyfriend without a condom and I am unsure whether I am protected because I thought I had started properly although it was only a bit and have had nothing since. On the leaflet it says that as soon as you take the pill on the first day of you period you are protected which is why I slept with my boyfriend without a condom.I am 18 and he is 19 and obviously we don't want children just yet so I just need some advice to put my mind at ease and to make sure that I am doing the correct thing.

I think you should ask your doctor about the combined pill, the mini pill is not as effective (97% with consistent correct use) and you will have regular predictable periods with the combined pill also.

I suggest you go back to the Doctor. Because the first time I started the Pill my Doctor told me to take it for the full month before considering that I had full protection.
Plus the Doctor said take it at the same time daily and never miss even one tablet.
Plus the Doctor said if ever I suffered an upset tummy Such that I suffered vomiting then consider that my protection that month was potentially compromised.
Plus my Doctor told me to read the literature in the packet before I started taking it and to be aware of any potential side effects. And to hot foot it back to the Doctor if I suffered any side affects.
Plus the Doctor said 'Good Luck'
Have you considered changing your Doctor to one with more empathy and time to give you the care and attention you deserve? Never be afraid to ask questions at the Doctors. They are there to help you. Your Doctor should have explained far more.
