You are SELF-SABOTAGING your job chances. In over 75% of success involving good jobs in line with your career, it's WHO YOU KNOW that gets you there. It's not a slight to your ability that you use connections or references. In fact, think of it as your abilities that won you those references and recommendations.
People who come in without references are looked upon as SUSPICIOUS. You'll be passed over and over and over.
I have been hiring people for 15 years. Trust me, if someone I know and trust vouches for a job applicant, I'll choose them over an unknown. It's just the way of the world.

You need recommendations so a business can get an idea of what type of worker you are. They need to know how others perceived you at previous jobs or situations. Otherwise they could waste money by simply hiring you on a whim that you're as good as you say. (Not saying you aren't good at what you do, just that they have no idea if you're telling the truth or not)Believe me, some people get hired and turn out to be awful employees and it makes you wonder if the business even checked their references. My friend works with someone like this that you wouldn't even believe would be able to keep his management position for so long with the awful actions he does, but if a hiring business took a reference from someone like my friend about this awful worker he would never get hired again and that would help the business by preventing them from hiring him.References are necessary for the businesses own benefit/protection. And like RubyBirtle said, it's nearly impossible to get a job without one. It's usually required on most applications here in the US.

Use the recommendations if that's going to help you get a job. Then you can prove your ability for the job role. Be smart about your options. Good luck

I don't know exactly what you mean by "references and recommendations" but, if you remain unemployed for over two years despite trying to get a steady job, then it's probably time to reconsider your tactics and start doing things differently.
In the UK a reference is an essential part of the job application process and it's very difficult to get any form of gainful employment without one.
