There hasn't been any change in his health or any other factors we can think of. I did try to Google possible answers but only got info about men being unable to achieve an erection at all, but his issue is only with getting himself hard. It's obviously frustrating for him. Any possible suggestions as to reason, or what to do about it? We didn't think there was much point taking up our doctor's time since there's nothing physically wrong with his penis' ability to get hard.

Most men get this from time to time, some more than others, and it's not really a medical issue, it's just the way it is. The real suprise is that this seems to be first time for your husband!
The best thing to do- no sex, masturbation or looking at porn for a short while. The little fella probably just wants a rest after being used throughly for a couple of decades!

If he can't get himself erect to masturbate; but you can, what's the problem?
Stop masturbating. He has desensitized himself.
