writes: Hi! I hope someone can help me out with this:I had got my period on the 19th of Nov and got done with it in about 5 days, 24th Nov. On the 28th I had my annual health check-up, in which I also got a pap smear test done. The doctor saw that there was some brownish discharge inside, and said it was probably some residue from the menstruation. But that hasn't gone away yet. In fact, it became, how shall I say it, umm...ok, it just started dripping today, a few drops, that were a very deep red..to the point of being brown in colour. I'd really like it if someone could tell me what it is. I'm 24 and sexually active.

Okay in response to your follow up... Im not entirely sure hun, up to that point I would have said yes pretty normal, and I just worked it out its 2-3 weeks since your period, so i guess your not due yet for maybe another week or so.. Now if you are on the pill then yes this can happen, but i dont know your medical back ground hun on this... This happend to me when i took a new pill, changed pill came off it or changed contraception not as a result of a smear test.. The discharge that you say you have yes i would say that was normal for after a smear.. and it could just be coincidence that all this happend after the smear and then you came on early... it could be your cycle playing up... but im not sure if your normally regular or not... it sounds as though you periods are finding a new pattern as a result of a new pill or just a normal hormone change, or seomthing like that the fact that it came on light like you say and then continued until you came back on suggests that it could calm down, i would personally run this by my doctor, i dont know the full details hun, so cant give a completely accurate account, but can only go on past experience of myself... i woulndt worry unduly at this stage as this all happend after the one incident and you have had your smear so if there are any probs they will contact you.. but dont leave it if you are worried... Feel free to message me if you like on here, ive had my fair share of issues with smears, pills, periods and problems, so if i can help give me a shout!
Take care x

Hello there!
This is relatively common and has happend go me before.
It just seems that the Period hung around for a while longer than normal and the lining to the cervix has been agitated by the smear test. Causing this, the period to hang around for a while longer. In effect, its called spotting. I myself have had extended discharge from a period thats hung around and then had a smear and it just kind of irritated it. its not unusual to spot anyway after a smear test as they are after all scraping the cervix. This is something that you might not usually notice, and its just been enhanced by the fact that you have had a smear test... Sometimes the pill can cause you to spot in between cycles and its not unheard of to come back on after a smear, or to have a light period while it all settles down. I wouldnt worry unduly for the time being see how you go over the next couple of days and wait for things to calm down we are all different, and then if your still concerned speak to your GP or Nurse that Carried out the Smear test and im sure they can put your mind at rest. Im sure that because it is after your monthly that its just excess discharge that taking a while to slow up and will calm down eventually.
Hope that helped.
