reader, anonymous, writes (13 July 2006): I had the same concerns and fears when I was your age. I got tired of wearing pads in Grade 8. I asked a close girlfriend for some advice.
She told me she started with the smallest size (they didn't have the juniors back in my day)and wait til I was heavy flow and try then as it better lubes. Yeah sounded a bit out there for me at the time to.
She said to try standing up with one leg up and then try sitting and spread. She said to try once a day.
I was afraid that it would hurt. I was afraid it would get lost.
It didn't hurt but felt foreign. I hadn't lost one yet and even then, where will it go? If his happens, just go to your family doctor.
It will come out just listen to WendyG when she said to not use them on lighter days.
They don't expand too much. They haven't expanded to the size if you were to drop one in a glass of water. I think that only happens if you have an extremly heavy flow and if you keep it in longer than the suggested time.
You've just started so take your time.

Have you thought about trying Lilets... they dont have an applicator so might be easier for you to use. Just relax and over time it will get easier! Its best to only really use tampons with a heavier flow, so if its getting to the end of your period it might be a good idea to use panty liners as it will be harder to remove a tampon towards the end of your cycle. Sometimes at the begining it can be a bit more difficult as your cycle is just getting warmed up! See how you go I know you say you dont like pads but try and see how your flow goes and use pads in the meantime as you are young your periods may yet change how they behave so just see how you go and how you feel. They do some good pads on the market now that you hardly know your wearing and no one else will know your on either! Tampons are like anything else, the more you practice the easier it becomes, relax a bit and dont get too flustered if it doesnt work straight away dont worry, put it to the back of your mind, the more you try in one sitting the more uncomfortable you will become, just take your time and in time it will become easier. They say not to wear a tampon for longer than 6 hours, but I always change every 4 just to be on the safer side. Also you shouldnt wear them at night so maybe get used to a brand of pads that will suit you best, there are allsorts on the market and some are more comfy than others and it does depend on the individual.
Take care and dont worry we all get the hang of it in the end, but the more you can relax the better it will be.

Okay when you first using tampons for the first time can be hard as the muscles are very tight but the best thing to use is the mini tampax as they've been espeically made for begininners.
Remember to always change them about every 6 hours and i know you don't like pads but try wearing them at night as you not meant to wear tampons all day.
