"A Day in History Game"

, posted over a year ago

Rather simple game really.....use any source you like (books, the web) to find famous/infamous events that happened in history.

Can be just about anything really but it has to be the truth and has to be factual: events, births, deaths, general interest, music, wars, crimes, disasters, entertainment, literary, sports, politics...

Your post should include the historical date, then describe the event and any little comment/thoughts you may want to include about the event. (optional)

Do not post more than one event per date. Let's let everyone else have a chance to post an interesting historical tidbit. It's a great way to learn some interesting facts that really happened in our past.

I will go first with the date "January 1" any year is okay. As long as it's "history" And the next poster will offer an historical fact about what happened on "January 2" and the next poster goes onto "January 3", and so forth. So below I will start with:

______________

January 1, 1962

"The Beatles audition for London record company Decca on the same day as Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. Decca signs the Tremeloes but not the Beatles".

Whoa! I bet the executives at Decca Records kicked their butts, later when the Beatles became famous! Because we know what became of the "Beatles' or rather, what didn't become of the "Tremelones". (or did they achieve success?)

________________

(So now the next poster goes onto January 2... of any year, in history) Have Fun!

Haha, Birdy. And as a fellow Canadian, you would likely know the locale of this place. Yellowknife is perched up on a huge slab of rock called the Canadian shield, way the hell and gone...up North in 'No man's' land.

True story here about my life in Yellowknife: I think the most traumatic event, the late (Nov)fall morning, I bundled up and went outside to feed our family dog, a big beautiful, Siberian Husky dog named 'Ken' (really..that was his name) You can imagine my shock to find the family dog, stiff as a board/frozen rock-solid. And this happened after..he slept the night in a warm doghouse, with blankets! The frigid temps has dipped freakishly low and it was the demise of poor 'Ken.' :( Took me about 6 months to forgive my poor Dad, for making 'Ken' sleep outside in the doghouse, in the first place!!

I once read the beheading of poor Mary Stuart was a horrid one. The axeman missed and finally gave the final blow on the 3rd try! Is that true? Oh my goodness, how brutal.

Welcome back, Sofia...I truely enjoy your contributions. Keep em coming, girl!

Here is a sad day to remember :(

February 26, 1993

"The 'World Trade Center' is bombed."

Six people were killed and 1,000 injured in a bomb attack which left a 60ft wide crater and $500 million in damage. The main structure was undamaged in the explosion

In a horrible eerily, ironic comment, in view of events later, on September 11, 2001, 34 year old broker, Bruce Pomper told reported, at the time of this first bombing and attack........

"It felt like an airplane hit the building"

Let us never forget the poor souls who lost their lives on this day and later on that fateful day of September 11, 2001.

It is indeed a very sad day, and a truely horrific one. We must always remember those who lost their lives and their families.

"1900 British Labour Party forms"

"1925 Hitler's resurrects NSDAP political party in Munich"

I couldn't decide between the two:

The creation of the Labour party is pretty important (even if it is utterly useless at the moment!)

As I study history and I travelled to Auswitzsch earlier this year, the formation of the NSDAP party is hugely significant. 6 million people lost their lives as a result of Hitler and his party. Auswitzsch was a trip to remember it was horrific, it is a phenomenal place but for every wrong reason imaginable.

If anyone wants to know more about Auswitzsch, or my feelings about my trip there then please message me - the trip was certainly one that I will never forget

I know this forum is supposed to be fun and lighthearted. But I found this below date, a particularily sad one.

March 23, 1989

"Joel Steinberg sentenced to 25 years for killing his adopted daughter"

I still see her face, in my mind..poor sad little Lisa Steinberg. I read this book and let me tell you, it was very disturbing book. The evil of this man and indifference of his severely abused wife, Hedda, just shocked me! I was further outraged when in Sept '07,

"Mr. Steinberg wanted the state's highest court to toss out the $15 million in damages he has been ordered to pay, for the beating death of 6-year-old Lisa in 1987. His twisted argument is that the tortured girl - whom he illegally adopted to begin with - only endured, "at most, eight hours of pain and suffering."

Where on earth does this messed up, skewed, stupid logic even come from??

"When Lisa died in a hospital, she weighed 43 pounds and her little body was covered in bruises. The medical examiner concluded that Lisa lingered unattended for eight to 10 hours before dying."

You know, in my city, I never see clothe lines, anymore! I think families are just way too busy nowadays, to actually hang out their clothing on lines. The convenience of the clothes dryer is far too tempting.

But, I do see cloth lines in the country, on farms and in small towns/villages. I will get that line up! Who knows..I could begin a good old fashioned but an enviromentally friendly, low energy cost 'trend' here. lol

Someone said they want to tour, in 2009-10. Not sure if that's a rumor, but if they do..Robert Plant has said he won't do the tour. Not sure if he's replaceable or it's well worth doing the tour, without him. His vocals were outstanding, back in the day!

Wow Phil, I can see how huge hailstones can kill people. That's solid ice coming at you from the sky, at a tremendously high speed! I've been caught in the middle of a few hailstorms, in my time..and even those small, teeny little suckers (hailstones) can hurt like heck, when they hit the skin! Back in August of '73, the largest hailstones measuring 4 inches, fell in Saskatchewan, Canada. These ones broke windows, dented cars, damaged the roofs of homes, and cause extensive damage to the wheat crops. Luckily, no lives were lost then. The prairies get hail storms so often that people just run for cover, when they see them coming, on the horizon!

After some recent maintenance we should be getting some even more fantastic pictures from the beginning of time. One light-second is 186,000 miles. Try to imagine that if you will.

"Final broadcast of Arsenio Hall talk show"

I remember watching that show..back in the early 90's! I wonder, what ever happened to Arsenio Hall? employed? working? acting? Haven't seen or heard much about him.

John F Kennedy born. He'd be 92 years of age now. Seems incredible.

Yes Phil..I often wonder if John F Kennedy had lived--it's probably highly possible he would have lived to this ripe old age, due to genetic longevity. (His parents--Rose was 104 and his father Joe, was 88 when they passed.)

Anyways, onto another great one....

1st June, 1968.

"American educator Helen Keller dies at the age of 87, in infancy, scarlet fever left her blind, deaf and mute.

Her parents appealed to the inventor Alexander Graham Bell for help, and he referred them to a semi blind teacher Anne Sullivan, who taught Helen to communicate by touch. She later learned to read using the Braille system, and in one month in 1890, how to speak.

She graduated cum laude from Radcliffe College

and gained international recognition as a writer, teacher, and lecturer.

Her lecture tours took her several times around the world, and she did much to remove the stigmas surrounding sight and hearing disorders, which historically had resulted in the committal of the blind and deaf in asylums"

Wow! when i read this i just thought what an inspiration this woman was for so many people.

"Angelina Jolie turns 34 years old today."

Some facts about Angelina. Aside from being an actress she also is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees since 2001. She has worked with field staff and met with refugees in over 20 countries. In 2003, she published Notes from My Travels, a collection of journal entries chronicling her early work with the U.N. In 2003, Angelina became the first person to be honored with the Citizen of the World Award from the UN's Correspondents' Association for her work as a goodwill ambassador. Kudos to her!

Sorry, just a quick amendment. Angelina's day of birth is June 4, 1975 and she just turned 34 years old recently. (2009) Anyone who read this, probably knew what I meant but it kinda bugged me, so just wanted to make that change. ;)
