When I lived in the Netherlands, people were just starting to celebrate it. They came to the door and sang with the most demure, tiny little bags in which to collect candy. If you celebrate it in Canada or the US, you bring a pillowcase as a loot bag and wear a mask, because it's ALL about the candy! Unless you are in your late twenties, when it's an excuse for a party and girls wear slutty costumes!

The night before is called "Devil's Night" or Mischief Night. That's when your doormat gets relocated to your roof, your house gets egged or toilet-papered and your windows get soaped, or kids play Nicky-Nicky-Nine-Doors (ring the bell and runs away, hide in the bushes and laugh). I think it's just an excuse to piss off neighbours that you don't like. X^P Montrealer's tend to celebrate it, some American locations too.

Another "Devils Night" Treat:

And it's a Game!

I probably shouldn't encourage bad behaviour or give the kids bad ideas, but we used to have a game that we called 'Light a Shite' aka 'Shite alight' where you find a couple of really fresh doggy-do's, put them in several brown paper bags, place it on some old cantankerous neighbour's doorstep and set light to it. Ring the doorbell, run like hell and watch from the bushes as the old geezer stamps it out in his slippers.

Another one was to empty the contents of several large firecrackers along a windowsill - 'Fourpenny Cannons' were ideal - place the blue touchpaper at the end of the line of gunpowder, apply the lighted end of a cigarette and run. The resulting flash was enough to light up the darkest room - not too dissimilar to those 'T' shaped camera 'flashguns' of days of old where the cameraman hid under a blanket.

Happy days. We'd probably get issued with ASBO's these days!

What is your favorite halloween loot? Mine's tootsie rolls and I'm so happy that both my daughters can't stomach them.

I put in a post that I yelled out who ever comes back with the most tootsie rolls, is my favourite daughter of 2008.

It was in jest. But when they came home, my youngest counted them and said DANG, *eldest's name* won.

I was like, honey I'm joking. You know I love you both, you're both my favorite for different reasons.

She's like yah Mom we so know that, but it was fun to race about it.

I told her well it's a tie because you gave me the candies first.

She said well, that takes the fun out of it.

We went to the store and bought us so pop. She was disappointed she didnt' get a can of pop this year, let alone a juicebox.

Did anyone dress up?

I went as a Porn Star that was knocked up. :D

its not a huge deal over here my daughter got 1 gummy bear from someone and most of the other houses pretended to be out...I enjoyed that gummy bear though (:0)

A porn star that was knocked up! HA HA! I like it! But then, my daughter dressed as a pregnant nun, so I guess i would! Fav costume, dressing as a pumpkin and having husband wear orange lipstick and a sign reading "Peter, Peter", or just having him go naked on roller skates, as a pull toy. HAHAHAHAHA! I think that they are posting us on that watchdog site...

Our kids were telling us that the Swedish Chef from the Muppet show was the big hit at all their Halloween parties.

(Which was a nice break from the shooting that they were the star witnesses for the previous weekend, right beside their brand new home! FABULOUS! ...and WTF! When do parents get to not worry anymore?)

Not many kids in our new neighbourhood. We always got about 150 in Toronto, 8 in the Netherlands, and only about 60 here in the great state of Illinois. Lots of Snickers for me!!! My husband loves those old fashioned sour candies called Rockets.

%^) Have Beer-goggles on! It's All Saints Day and the clocks go back tonite. You'd think that Europe and America would get together on this. Anyone know why the discrepancy?

We only go to our friends & relative's houses, the kids get just as much (if not more)as going door to door. Great grammas & grampas and our senior friends always wait by the door for us, we go in for a little visit (maybe a beer or 2 at some) They all just love our company and they make our kids up special treat bags (filled right full then decide to give them 2 each). We love it!!!

Is this selfish????? Yesterday me & the kids made candied apples & pumpkin cookies....... We purposely waited till the day after halloween to make 'em so we wouldn't have to share!!!! They'll last longer that way!! I never baked anything pumpkin before, we had so much fun disecting that pumpkin & baking all day!!! Think I'd like to add this to our tradition!!!!

The kids say TRICK OR TREAT! When they come to your door, Meaning you either give them a treat or they will trick you by throwing an egg at your window or something else..Its bribery by ankle biters hunny :)

Surely it should be called Treat or Trick then?

I usually wind them up by saying "I'll have a treat please". Tey get their bar of chocolate though - especially if they dress the part. It's usually only the neighbours' kids that come round here and their parents go with them. Sensible in this day and age. Never had an egg chucked yet. I hope they're free range.

Bonny night tomorrow night. Yippee! Now I can get rid of my out of date distress flares from the boat!

I'd never heard of trick or treat when I was a bit younger. Seems to me it's an American import that arrived here sometime in the '80's as another method for kids to extort goodies from the unsuspecting population.

What's the halloween equivalent of Bah Humbug!?

Hey Peps! I just sent my daughter a cup with a lion and tiger on it, and a t-shirt "Holy Crap Lions Tour" that I made on their website over in Britain (she's in London). The really diabolical thing is that she will have that song running thru her head every time she has a cup of tea... Live long enough to avenge yourself, I always say!!!!
