Will alcohol make you sick the first time you drink it even if it is just a small amount?

A female United States age 30-35, *adedpearl writes:

My new boyfriend wants to bring over some champagne or wine for our romantic Valentine's dinner at my house.

The problem is I have never drank alcohol in my life, just was never interested or associated with people who drink. Of course I would like to try some and would not drink more than a glass.

I had my first cigarette by my roomie in college a few years ago and I was in the bath room throwing up for three days straight from that one cigarette. It gave me a bad sore throat too for the longest time. Needless to say I have never smoked since.

Will alcohol make you sick the first time you drink it even if it is just a small amount? It will be the first time it has entered my system so will it make my stomach hurt or what?

A male reader, daletom United States +, writes (13 February 2013):

For the large majority of people their first drink of alcohol DOES NOT make them sick. Of course there are all kinds of allergies, intolerances, sensitivities, etc that different people have to various foods and food substances but I think those kinds of reactions to alcohol are rare. Cigarettes, on the other hand, are a very different story . . .

I'm sure you are aware that alcohol is a drug - a legal, drug of choice, but a drug never the less. Enjoy it in moderation, and responsibly. There are hundreds or thousands of web sites that can teach you how to do that. This may be especially important if you grew up in a family where you didn't observe adults enjoying alcohol responsibly.

Even though I grew up in a family where alcohol was enjoyed in moderation I was essentially a non-drinker through my teens and early 20's - probably around 2 or 3 beers a year through college. I met the girl who became my wife when we were 22, and she came from a STRICTLY tea-total family. Out of respect for her beliefs, and my in-laws, I refrained during the early years of marriage. (I had her permission to enjoy alcohol in moderation but not in her presence.) I don't recall when or how, but eventually she decided to try wine and beer. Now we usually share a bottle of wine on our anniversary, perhaps another around the holidays, and 2 or 3 beers in the course of a year.

If you are of Asian descent, alcohol may make you ill even in small quantities. (google it if you want to know more.)

Honeypie agony auntI agree with the Cider or... add some Spite/7Up to it because Champagne can be a tad "sour" (dry) and therefore is an acquired taste.

If you do drink it stick to 1/2 glass - 1 glass.

Daisy_Daisy agony auntJust to add to the other advice you've been given, maybe try having a small glass of wine this evening to see how you react. Hopefully you'll be fine, and then you'll know you don't need to worry during your Valentine's day date.

A reader, anonymous, writes (12 February 2013):

It probably won't make you sick, but if you have never drunk before even one glass will probably make you drunk. My sister-in-law was a teetotaller, and the three sips of sake that she had to drink at her wedding (it's a Japanese thing) made her drunk.

And champagne, particularly sweet champagne, tastes like lemonade. People often get drunk on it because they don't realise how strong it is.

So after you've had your first glass and are thinking, "hey, this tastes good, and I'm not at all drunk. I'll have another" just remember that it might kick in a little later. Stick to one glass. You don't want to spend Valentine's Day talking to God on the big white telephone.

Don't drink beer as it is your first time you may not like it. And no you won't get sick l?l. Just try a little first to make sure you are comfortable with it then see where it ends up. Don't get drunk or wasted as it is your first time and I don't think that you'll like the feeling the next day. Hope I could help

YouWish agony auntAlcohol isn't like cigarettes let me assure you!

Beer is a good start, but I even more recommend a good wine cooler like Seagram's or Bartle's and James in various flavors. The taste of beer is an acquired taste, but wine coolers are very good if you're not going to go straight for the firewater beforehand.

Smirnoff Ice is a good "entry" beverage too. I like those in the summer after working or playing outside.

If you're wanting champagne or wine, try White Zinfandel which is sweet on the palate and also a good introduction to wine. Chardonnay or Sauvignon blanc are good romantic wines too, the latter being good if you love seafood.

For champagne, the flavors go from sweet to dry (brut), and you can go regular or rose (pink).

I would not recommend starting with red wine, as the more full-bodied flavor can be pungent on palates not used to alcohol. Very strong flavor.

Alcohol will only make you sick if you drink too much, too fast. Sipping on one glass is going to be just fine.

ihavetoomanythoughts agony auntI've never heard of anyone getting sick form alcohol, but maybe you should ask your boyfriend to bring something with less alcohol content for your first time. Wines and champagnes taste very strange the first time you have it, so you might not like it. Could I suggest that you ask him to pick up something more sweet and less dry? As Cerberus said, ciders are a good choice. Fruity wines like moscato also taste very nice as well.

person12345 agony auntI've never heard of that happening, ever. Some people are sensitive to wine, but only after at least a few glasses. Just one won't hurt.

Are you sure you didn't have food poisoning or a stomach bug that was just a coincidence from the cigarette? I mean cigarettes are terrible for you, but that sounds like an untimely stomach bug.

A reader, anonymous, writes (12 February 2013):

It shouldn't OP, the only reason it would is if you're allergic to it or have a very sensitive stomach.

Half a glass of wine should be fine but you'd better off with a beer.

Wine is quite strong, even one glass will go straight your head and there's always the risk you may love the taste and before you know it have had more than you bargained for.

OP a good beer is far more gentle on the stomach, you can also have more than one and not risk being wasted. Plus a cheap wine can give you a headache from one glass, and honestly if you decide you like being tipsy and want to get a bit more drunk, wine is one of the worst hangovers imaginable. If you don't like beer go for a cider.

A glass cold beer with a meal is much nicer than wine in my opinion unless the wine is expensive and chosen specifically for the kind of meat you're eating.

Ask him to bring over a 6 pack of light tasting beer like Miller instead. Both wine and beer are acquired tastes anyway, at least with beer it'll be a lot softer on the palate.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (12 February 2013):

No it definitely won't. Just don't drink too much (a glass is fine though) because it'll probably make you drunk quicker because you're not used to it.
