Why are guy scared to just say they like you?

I'm wondering why guys never approach me. Instead they get their friends to drop hints. For example a guy had his friends yell out to me "[His name] likes you." And another guy today had his friends yell out "Hey [His name] wants to say hello to you especially" and another guy threw his ball at me and his friends said dont be mad he likes you. Why do guys do this?
