The pill is 99.9% safe but like anything it does not come with a guarantee.
To cover the 0.01% , use the condom as a backup and you can also prevent STI's and STD's.
A regular partner could be clean but there is no knowing that he could pick up AIDS or STD's unknowningly even though he did not engage in sex with others.

I was on the microgynon for 3 months before changing to another pill. All pills, if taken correctly everyday for 21 days straight are quite effective. If you want to be sure the pill is working, do the first 3 months with condoms. As this is when your body is settling down to the pill. After that, your doctor will give you a check up on the pill to see if your body suits that pill brand. If you've had no issues, your good to go. I've been on the pill since June, and since september i've been condom free (apart from when medication has affected the pill) and i've had no pregnancies so far :)

Yes, I think it's something like 99.7% effective. SO for the great majority of women it's effective, if taken right. Just make sure you read the instruction manual thoroughly. It can be made less effective if you're taking some medications.
Nothing is 100% guarenteed protection. But I've been on microgynon for 3 years and, like marieclaire, no babies as of yet!

I was on this pill, only for 2 months though. I didn't get pregnant but it made me feel incredibly sick after the 1st month.
