A male reader, Odds United States +, writes (22 March 2011):

Odds agony auntI don't know what there is to actually do in your town, but generally, anything that requires you to keep your hands occupied (drinking coffee, painting, driving, even playing video games if you're really desperate) will tend to make conversation easier, especially for guys.

As for what to say, you don't just have to talk aobut things to do, or things you have done. You can talk about ideas, ambitions, plans, or hopes. Want to move to a bigger city someday? Talk about big cities, what you've heard they have, why you want to go there. Are you a movie buff? Start by talking about movies you both have seen, then transition to the kind of movie you would like to make if you ever could.

Conversation doesn't have to be limited to things you've done or are doing. Get creative.
