Now me and him have broken up and i dont want to get back with him but in my culture you have to be a virgin when you get married. Will i bleed again if i dont have sex for 3 years and have sex again?

reader, anonymous, writes (13 August 2009): Not necessarily, no. I had sex a few times and it was painful, though I didn't bleed. Then I didn't have sex for 3 years (coincidentally) and then I did bleed, but I think that was just because something tore inside because I wasn't excited enough, and it hurt. I bled again the next few times, but never again since. So I guess it's possible you could bleed, but not very likely. Bleeding as a virgin is the hymen breaking so yours is definitely broken. But the hymen can break doing anything, heavy exercise, tampons, before you have sex. So if you don't bleed when you next have sex, no one should assume you're not a virgin.
